Tannoy Tannoy Active Monitors Tannoy Ellipse Series
| | Tannoy Ellipse 8 | Product Description TANNOY has introduced a new generation of advanced performance studio monitoring, in the spectacular shape of the Ellipse 8. The fully time-aligned, 3-way active system combines Dual Concentric™ and Wideband Technology, radically extending the frequency bandwidth into the ultrasonic reaches of 96 and 192 kHz sample rate recording and significantly improving phase accuracy and stereo imaging of the signal. The elliptically styled enclosure, while providing an arresting design aesthetic, is primarily intended to eliminate internal standing waves and cabinet resonance (and the resultant signal colouration inherent in flat surfaced designs); the form is exceptionally rigid and the construction laminated birch, with a massive MDF baffle and rear panel. The enclosure incorporates dual concentrically mounted LF and HF drivers, providing a 40 Hz to 14 kHz frequency response, each powered by a low noise, low distortion,150 w integrated power amp section. The dual concentric design provides a flat frequency response from a single point source, maintaining exceptional phase accuracy in both stereo and multi-channel surround applications. A TANNOY Wideband SuperTweeter™, driven by a discrete 30 w amplifier circuit, provides additional frequency response above the roll-off point of the HF dual concentric driver, up to 54 kHz. Recording and monitoring frequencies at such upper limits - several octaves beyond the range of human hearing - provides two fundamental benefits in improving the accuracy and realism with which we can reproduce musical signals within the audible bandwidth. Such extended frequency response enables the more faithful reproduction of most instruments, nearly all of which generate considerable energy above 20 kHz. These ultrasonic frequencies clearly have an effect on the fundamental sound of an instrument within the audible range, particularly in the improved accuracy of reproduction of harmonics and transient response. Secondly, the use of the SuperTweeter™ significantly reduces high frequency phase error in the monitor signal by moving the low pass roll-off point higher up the frequency range, away from the critical area of human hearing; typically - 6 dB at 54 kHz. Other features of the Ellipse 8 include an exceptionally wide sweet spot as a result of its 90 degree horizontal dispersion. A multi-function LED indicator provides a range of status indications and warnings; normal operation, thermal trip, amplifier failure, voltage and current clipping, are all indicated. A unique feature is the Very Low Frequency warning which indicates the presence of excessive subsonic content in the mix (typically between 1 and 15 Hz); built in hi-pass filtering prevents this from causing excessive cone excursions or amplifier drain and the LED flashes to indicate the continued presence of the offending signal to alert mix or mastering engineers to take remedial action. Trim controls on the rear panel allow for compensation and correction of room variations, and input signal, providing hi, mid and low trim, and input sensitivity. Another remarkable feature of the rear panel is the "multi-fingered" heat sink, providing 60% higher efficiency than a finned heat sink of equivalent size. | | |
