The Korg TR88 is a 88-key music workstation featuring the Korg Hyper Integrated synthesis engine that powers the Korg Triton, with 64MB Samples, 512 Programs, 200,000-note Sequencer, Effects, USB MIDI IN, OUT, THRU, portable SD card data storage, and 16-track sequencer. Packed in a sleek black body housing a 16-track sequencer, superb effects engine, and a user-friendly interface, the TR88 will be used in live performances as well as production studios.
The Korg TR88 Music Workstation is based on the Hyper Integrated sound that made the TRITON series the standard synth of pro musicians around the planet. 64MB of PCM data doubles the size of the original TRITON ROM and the 48kHz sampling frequency surpasses CD standards to deliver highly expressive, professional-quality sound. This wealth of PCM data is enhanced by multi-mode resonant filters, abundant modulation tools, and sophisticated effects to create the rich and brilliant sound with the warmth and fatness you've come to expect from Korg. The TR88 maintains compatibility with many TRITON family sounds and songs.
Sampled waveforms include stereo-sampled piano (from the same sampling session used on the OASYS), electric piano, nylon-string guitar, acoustic guitar, and strings. With wide dynamic ranges and natural instrument articulations and vibrato, these waveforms create expressive, realistic sounding voices. A full complement of top-quality drum sounds and patterns cover a broad range of styles for studio and live performance use. The TR88 Music Workstation provides 470 high-quality multisamples and 518 outstanding drum samples for a large cross-section of styles and feels.
Various modulation modes create motion, nuance, and articulation to give voices your unique creative signature. The TR88 Music Workstation's Alternate Modulation provides 42 types of AMS (Alternate Modulation Source) including EG, LFO, keyboard tracking, and joystick (as well as controllers such as knobs and pedals) for creation of sophisticated, vibrant sounds. These modulations can be changed and operated in realtime to give your sounds a breathing, alive quality.
Korg took a page from their acclaimed D-Series digital recorders and TRITON workstations to equip the TR88 with 89 types of effects for sonic enhancement. Two Master effects, one stereo Insert effect, and one Master 3-band synergize with a comprehensive mixer section to control routing. Many effects allow realtime modulation of parameters and tempo-based synchronization, interacting with your songs and sounds to further personalize your musical vision. Parameters can be set independently for each Program, Combination, and Song.
The TR88 programs and combinations contain a stereo piano with velocity-switches between two levels, providing dynamic, realistic response to your touch, as well asl realistic electric pianos, choirs, guitars, strings, woodwinds, and drums. Included in the TR88 is a rich assortment of synth and sound-effect programs for trance, techno, and hip-hop music. In addition to the 512 preloaded Programs, 128 GM-compatible programs and 9 drum kits allow General MIDI level 2 compatibility. All Program locations are RAM so you can adjust sounds to your liking or replace them as you wish, a useful capability that you won't find on most synths. Up to 512 Programs, 384 Combinations, and 24 drum kits can be stored to the internal memory and may also be stored or transferred to your computer with an SD card.
The TR88 is compatible with many sounds available for the TRITON and Karma keyboards, with many commercial and user/shareware sounds available for the extremely popular TRITON platform. The TR88 can load sounds made for the TRITON Classic, Le and Karma music workstations, using only Insert effect 1 while ignoring the other four and also disregarding Karma settings. Sounds with TRITON Studio and Extreme can be loaded, with variable reproduction depending on whether those particular Triton patches are found in the TR88.
The TR88 16-track sequencer provides a capacity of 200,000 notes and up to 200 songs, creating a comprehensive music production system in an easily usable, portable configuration. Realtime or step time recording is supported, and a powerful toolbox of editing utilities is provided.
Set up new songs quickly and easily. Just choose a template song (16 preset, 16 user) that has sounds and effects already set up or use Auto Song Setup to instantly change the Program or Combination you are currently playing into a new record-ready song, with all your current effect and arpeggiator settings intact. Either way, you're ready to start recording immediately before you lose that flash of musical inspiration.
Construct arrangements in Cue List with up to 99 sections and convert them into a single song for consecutive playback or to create new song structures. Build songs using 150 preset drum patterns or 100 user patterns as well as using Track Loop function to loop specified regions of measures within each track.
Song data can also be saved on an SD card in SMF (Standard MIDI File) format 0 or 1, allowing data exchange with most MIDI sequencers. Share r ideas with other musicians who are computer users or move your songs into your computer for further editing, notation, or integration with other applications. Once again, Song data can be loaded from the TRITON and Karma line of music workstations though only Insert Effect 1 will be loaded, the other four are ignored. Karma settings will also be ignored, as will Tone Adjust settings from the Studio and Extreme.
The Korg TR88 contains dual arpeggiators, and can store a total of 216 different patterns, either fixed-note drum patternsor variable pitched parts. Arpeggiatos can be MIDI synched to run with the internal sequencer or BPM-based effects.
Korg's RPPR, Realtime Pattern Play/Recording, function records a sample and play it back from an assigned key. 150 preset drum patterns are included, with 100 additional custom patterns for each Song.
A rear panel USB connector (type B) lets you make MIDI connections to your computer with a single cable, no additional MIDI interface needed. The TR76 connects with a computer-based DAW for recording or notation. Transmission and reception of sys-ex data allows you to manage sounds and other types of data on your computer for efficient song production. Alternatively, you can transfer sounds, sequences, and sample data in and out of the TR88 on an SD card, as the TR88 reads SD card capacities from 16 MB to 1 GB.
With the addition of the Korg EXB-SMPL sampling upgrade option board, the TR88 turns into a full-blown sampler. The TR88 sampling mode supports 48kHz 16-bit linear mono/stereo sampling with waveform editing functions that include time slice, time stretch/compress, and crossfade loop. The user-installable EXB-SMPL lets you connect external SCSI devices to the TR88 for taking advantage of a wide range of storage media as well as CD-ROM sound libraries (ISO9660 and AKAI-format discs are supported). AIFF/WAV files and AKAI® S1000/S3000 samples and programs as well as Korg format data can be loaded.
