In addition to their impressive specifications, the Black Widow Series speakers are equally outstanding for their features, such as an engineered Kevlar impregnated cone and a more refined magnet structure. The Kevlar cone is stiffer than an equivalent weight paper cone, offering a reduced tendency to distort the dimensions of the voice coil and thus avoiding rubs and scrapes. This feature increases the power handling of the loudspeaker. The Kevlar cone also offers lower distortion, due to the greater dampening of excess and unwanted cone vibrations. The piston action of the cone is extended to a higher frequency, and the range above piston action is more controlled with reduced break-up.
The Black Widow 15'' model loudspeakers incorporate a cone that is 1/2'' deeper. The deeper cone offers increased resistance to cone "folding" and break-up, reducing cone cry. The increase in structural integrity extends the piston range of the cone, improving fidelity and reliability under high SPL conditions. To accommodate the new deeper cone, a new basket has been designed. The deeper basket is engineered for enhanced structural rigidity.
Attention to details and an extensive research program into loudspeaker power handling characteristics have enabled us to reevaluate our Black Widow power ratings and provide ratings according to widely utilized industry standards. Continuous power for eight hours per EIA Standard RS-426A is rated at 350 watts. Power capacity per AES 2-1984 Standard is 600 watts for 2 hours. (Due to ongoing research, Peavey reserves the right to revise these ratings when appropriate.) Black Widow speakers also feature a very convenient field-replaceable basket to reduce down time and expensive repair bills should the unit become damaged. For enhanced performance, the Black Widows incorporate an edge-wound, four-inch voice coil and Kapton voice coil former for high efficiency. | |
