The Red 1 contains four world class solid-state mic preamps, based on the DSP1100 module, which uses high quality components including Luhndahl transformer coupling of inputs and outputs. There are just the essential controls, switched rotary gain from -6dB to +0dB, 48V phantom power and phase, plus a backlit VU meter and a wipe clean scribble disc for those who could actually bring themselves to mark this gorgeous machine.
Focusrite curved red chunky panel, with the fine aluminium grain showing, and shiny chrome knobs are not as blindingly extrovert as one might expect. In the flesh they are obvious, tactile and have a simple beauty that will outlast their novel attractiveness.
Focusrite sound brings the more fine detail up to the surface and has lots ofmuscle power when coping with wide dynamics, but due to its great accuracy, can lay bare the "electronic sounding" presence of some solid state condensers which suffer strong HPF resonance in the 100Hz region. Soft sounding valve mics would beagood match for the sharp Focusrite edge and definition which can project a voice through a dense pop mix. |
