The Red 3 compressor has a lot in common with the Blue 230. Under the skin they are virtually identical, and just looking at the front panels, they seem like identical twins, separated at birth! The minimalist design is for engineers who know what they're doing, since the controls have very little calibration, but the controls really get to work on the signal with such a transparency that you can easily hear where the "right" settings are.

The cheerful round VU meters are illuminated as are all the buttons. The limiter will not work on its own but functions as an extension to the compressor's action. The single Focusrite VCA in each channel's signal path does all the work, but is guided by the summed sidechain control voltages from two VCA, one which compresses and a second that limits the output of the first. These themselves are class A dbx units. There are precious few solid-state VCA compressors nicer than the Red 3 for much less money, although the dbx Blue 160 SL is itsobvious rival inthe same price bracket.
