Squier Squier Tele Style Squier Vintage Modified
Squier Tele Custom P90
Still the most brutally functional yet elegant electric guitar ever built, the ubiquitous Telecaster® ruggedly takes all kinds of departures from the standard format in its capable stride.
Fender® has invested a lot of effort into shaking down its Squier® range lately, and the new Tele® Custom II is a hybrid that blends some influences from the 1970's with a couple of cool modern touches, and a very wallet-friendly price. With updates revolving around a revamped pickup configuration featuring two Duncan-designed P90-type single coils and an unusual (for Fender®) control layout that is directly borrowed from a mid 1970's Fender® Tele® Custom, this humble Squier® looks certain to recruit a whole raft of new members to the cause of Teledom.
Body & Neck
Through-body stringing is a factor in this Tele® Custom's lively ringing tone, and is a surprisingly upmarket inclusion at this price. Even strummed acoustically, the whole guitar has a pleasing brisk quality that's almost certainly enhanced by using traditional through-body stringing. It is very encouraging to find this attention to detail at this price level when many Squier® models, not to mention some Japanese and Mexican Fender® Telecaster® guitars, use modified standard Telecaster® bridges that anchor strings at the and of the bridge plate on top of the guitar.
If you like your guitar necks chunky but comfy then you'll probably feel quite at home with this Tele® Custom. The maple neck's rounded profile feels almost like a Custom Shop Relic Nocaster® neck due to the large vintage-style girth, although here we have a flatter 9.50 inch fingerboard radius and beefy medium jumbo frets. The neck has a lovely solid feel and, at the risk of committing heresy, I'd say that it plays better than Fender® vintage reissue Tele® necks, particularly for more modern styles. Wide string bends are certainly easier, and straight out of the box there's nothing to diminish the enjoyment of playing this guitar.
Hardware and Parts
The Telecaster®'s versatility and general air of rugged usefulness make it an ideal host for any number of changes to the standard design, and Fender has certainly subjected its baby to many experiments over the decades. The elongated scratchplate and two-volume, two-tone control layout (augmented by a three-way toggle pickup) dates directly from the 1970's humbucker-loaded Tele® Custom models, but the twin-soapbar pickups represent an interesting new direction.
Designed by Seymour Duncan, these P90-1 pickups are a great way of adding extra width to the traditional Tele® tone without losing too much of the bite and twang for which Telecaster® guitars are so renowned.
If you are looking for a second guitar, the Squier® Custom II is an ideal model due to the darker sounding P90's; although the fundamental Fender® tone remains.
The fixed bridge has six Strat®-style steel saddles mounted on a flat steel plate with plenty of room for action and intonation adjustment. Whenever a Tele® appears with six adjustable saddles, the debate invariably arises as to the obvious benefits of the six-saddle design compared with the vintage three-saddle variety. Personally, I'll willingly sacrifice a bit of vintage integrity in the name of enjoying such little luxuries as spot-on intonation any day. A set of six chrome tuners complete the headstock along with two 'T'-shaped string trees.
Sounds
The Tele® Custom II's naturally bright, airy tone is reflected in its amplified sound.
Compared with a Stratocaster®, the Tele® may have less sounds but the Tele®'s directness and simplicity are what helps to make it such a popular guitar for recording and playing live. The bridge pickup punches above its weight and the Duncan Designed bridge pickup sounds warm and chocolaty. Lashing out throaty power chords through a slightly dirty amp with the bridge pickup engaged is a rewarding experience that almost suggests that the Tele® and the P90 were made for each other.
The standard Telecaster® neck pickup has rarely matched the character or sheer usefulness of its neighbour at the bridge, but the P90-1 does a great job of adding a much-needed bit of muscle. The Duncan Designed pickup is more powerful and therefore more flexible than the standard neck unit. Jazz chords tumble effortlessly from the guitar with the neck pickup engaged.
